The two Indian fishermen rescued by the Sri Lanka Navy from the distressed Indian fishing vessel following an accident in Sri Lankan territorial waters on 31 July 2024 and the mortal remains of the fisherman who passed away while being admitted to Pungudutivu Hospital for treatment, were repatriated safely to India. The Sri Lanka Coast Guard handed over the two survivors and the deceased to the Indian Navy at the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) between India and Sri Lanka on 2 August 2024.

State Minister of Foreign Affairs Tharaka Balasuriya in his address to the 31st Ministerial Meeting of the ASEAN Regional Forum in Laos on 27 July called for the Asia Pacific region to concertedly address emerging challenges including security-related aspects of new and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, with a view to taking preventive measures against their misuse.

The Council of the European Union (EU) on 26 July 2024, renewed the list of persons, groups and entities set out by the Common Position 2001/931/CFSP with the view to combatting terrorism, and the LTTE continues to be banned in the EU for a further period of six months.
The proscribed persons, groups and entities are subject to the freezing of its funds and other financial assets or economic resources in EU member states, as well as it is prohibited for EU entities to make funds and economic resources available to the proscribed organisations.

Sri Lanka vehemently reiterates its rejection of the allegation of genocide in Sri Lanka in the statement issued on 23 July 2024 by the Canadian Prime Minister. Sri Lanka’s position on this matter has been previously reiterated to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
This allegation arising from local domestic vote bank politics in Canada is not conducive to unity and communal harmony in both Sri Lanka and Canada.

Foreign Minister Ali Sabry paid an official visit to Poland from 18 -21 July, 2024 and held bilateral talks with the Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski.
During the discussions, both Ministers emphasized the importance of further strengthening cooperation. They recognized the potential for growth in several key areas, including port development, tourism, agro-industry, and the automotive industry. The two Ministers also discussed regional and multilateral issues including the shared commitment to global peace and security, sustainable development, and climate action.


Minister Sabry, reiterated the need for an expeditious visa facilitation mechanism in view of the potential for employment for Sri Lankans in Poland. Minister Sikorski responded by proposing a G2G Agreement to create legal and dignified employment opportunities for the Sri Lankan labour market in identified sectors. Both Ministers also discussed enhanced people-to-people connections and cultural exchanges.
