Minister Sabry meets Ambassador of Russian Federation regarding Sri Lankans in the Russia – Ukraine conflict PDF Print option in slimbox / lytebox? (info) E-mail

On 29 May 2024 Foreign Minister Ali Sabry held a follow up discussion with Russian Ambassador Levan S Dzhagaryan relating to the urgent situation regarding the Sri Lankans engaged in the Russia – Ukraine conflict. This meeting was subsequent to the previous meeting held with the Russian Ambassador on 07 May 2024. 

 

The Minister of Foreign Affairs informed the Russian Ambassador of the decision taken by H E President, Ranil Wickremesinghe to nominate a high-level delegation led by State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon Tharaka Balasuriya to visit the Russian Federation to engage in discussions with the Russian authorities. The Minister of Foreign Affairs also informed Ambassador Dzhagaryan of the action taken by the Sri Lanka Embassy in the Russian Federation seeking the relevant appointments for the Sri Lanka delegation.  The Russian Ambassador shared the concerns of the Sri Lanka side regarding the welfare of its nationals and assured the Minister that all efforts will be made to facilitate the visiting delegation.

 

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also informed the Russian Ambassador that a senior Foreign Service officer Ambassador P M Amza will assume duties with immediate effect as Charge d’Affaires of the Sri Lanka Embassy in Moscow.

 

In view of the urgency of the situation, Ambassador Dzhagaryan expressed his support to work closely with Sri Lanka to resolve this matter.  As an immediate step, Ambassador Dzhagaryan informed that henceforth Russia will do more thorough visa interviews before the issuance of visit visas for ex-servicemen as it is observed that many of those who left for Russia have travelled on visit visas.  Minister Sabry also reiterated that Sri Lankan authorities have repeated their appeal to the public not to fall victim to human traffickers and to refrain from engaging with illegal channels of employment. 

 

Prior to meeting the Russian Ambassador, the Foreign Minister also held a discussion with the families of Sri Lankans engaged as combatants in the Russia – Ukraine conflict in the presence of parliamentarians Dayasiri Jayasekara and Gamini Waleboda at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 28th May 2024 and expressed the Government’s commitment to ensuring their well-being and safe return.

 

In parallel, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reached out to the Ukraine authorities in discussing assistance, release and safe return of the Sri Lankans allegedly deployed in the Ukraine army.

The staff of the Sri Lanka High Commission, New Delhi observed Vesak, the thrice blessed day for Buddhists the world over on 23 May 2024 with several activities.

The main event was held at the High Commission premises with the participation of Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture of India Meenakshi Lekhi as the Chief Guest. Additional Secretary of the Indian Ocean Region Division of the Ministry of External Affairs Puneet Agrawal and representatives from the Ministry of External Affairs, Heads of Mission and representatives of the Delhi-based diplomatic corps, members of Sri Lankan community and students in Delhi also attended the event.


A large rotating Vesak lantern crafted by a committed team was displayed at the main entrance of the High Commission on the road adjoining the Mission, visible to passers-by. The lantern was officially illuminated and inaugurated by State Minister Lekhi during the event and will remain open for public viewing until 27 May 2024. Octagonal lanterns adorned the Mission perimeter also added to Delhi’s cultural landscape, not only beautifying the environs but also symbolically offering the wisdom of Buddhism to the world, encompassing the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.

Emphasising on deep India Sri Lanka Buddhism link, Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India, Kshenuka Dhireni Senewiratne on the Vesak day celebrations at the high commission in New Delhi pointed to how the message of Buddhism reached her country from India. The Sri Lankan high commissioner was decked up with lights to celebrate the day, with a large white Vesak lantern outside the mission.

"Sri Lanka received the message of Buddhism in the time of Emperor Ashoka," High Commissioner Senewiratne reminded, invoking the historical ties that have bound Sri Lanka and India through the ages. She emphasised on how Vesak is not a mere reminder of Buddha's enlightenment but a moment for profound reflection on his teachings.

Highlighting the enduring ties between Sri Lanka and India, Senewiratne remarked, "Sri Lanka and India will forever be bound by the unbreakable bonds of our countries' Buddhist heritage."

This underscores the deep-rooted cultural and spiritual connections that have historically defined the relationship, with new focus being on Buddhist circuit.

Senewiratne emphasised the broader regional significance of Buddhism, noting how it has shaped the cultural landscapes of nations beyond Sri Lanka and India. "The Buddha was born in Lumbini, and attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya and Parinirvana in Kushi Nagar" she remarked, pointing to the profound impact of Buddhism across South and Southeast Asia.
