The Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the Chairmanship of the Indian Ocean Rim Association in collaboration with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce as the current Chair of the IORA Business Forum, will be hosting the first Business Conclave under Sri Lanka’s Chairmanship of IORA at the Shangri-La Hotel from 28 to 29 May 2024.

 

The Business Conclave under the theme of “Sustaining Growth – Bridging Horizons” will focus on the key sectors of smart agriculture, ICT, logistics, tourism, renewable energy and SME Development and women's empowerment. The Forum is expected to provide an opportunity for leaders of Industry to develop stronger economic partnerships and connections across the Member States of IORA.

 

Participants are expected to gain greater exposure to diverse business and investment prospects to build synergies with their counterparts from the 23 IORA countries and 12 Dialogue Partner countries who will be represented by their trade delegations.

 

The Business Conclave precedes the IORA 26th Committee of Senior Officials Meeting scheduled for 30 – 31 May 2024.

- Says the President delivering a special statement in Parliament 

President Ranil Wickremesinghe emphasized that Sri Lanka has the potential to become a developed country in the world if we unite and reach a consensus. He reiterated the importance of a shared agreement for the country's progress.

He urged everyone not to overlook the chance to contribute to the future generation of the nation and cautioned that prioritizing personal ambitions over the country's interests during this challenging period could lead to significant destruction.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe made these remarks while delivering a special statement in the Parliament today (09).

President Ranil Wickremesinghe highlighted that our present actions will define our future reputation. He questioned whether someone would be remembered as a person who betrayed the country or as part of a group known for their love and dedication to it. He emphasized the importance of making this determination.

The President emphasized that forming a unified consensus is not solely the responsibility of public representatives in Parliament, but also falls upon religious leaders, trade unions, professionals, the business community, non-governmental organizations, various opinion leaders, individuals with social influence, and every citizen.

The Second Sri Lanka - UK Strategic Dialogue was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 07 May 2024. The Sri Lanka delegation at the meeting was led by Director General / Europe and North America Shobini Gunasekera and the UK side by Director / India and Indian Ocean Directorate at the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) Ben Mellor.  Discussions were also held with Foreign Secretary Aruni Wijewardane.
