His Excellency Shri Pranab Mukherjee President of the Republic of India New Delhi
Excellency, The Government and people of Sri Lanka join me in extending to you our sincere congratulations on your election as President of the Republic of India. Having come to know you closely for long years, your election to the highest office in the Republic of India as Head of State is a matter of deep joy for me personally. The decision of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) to entrust you with this important responsibility and the support that rallied towards your candidacy from parties outside the UPA are manifestations of the trust placed in you by the people of India and the high regard in which you are held. Hailing from a family of freedom fighters, you have navigated the academic and political fields with distinction for long years, winning the confidence and respect of all, both in India and abroad. The people of Sri Lanka salute your achievements and acknowledge your long standing and sustained efforts in strengthening relations between India and Sri Lanka. I am confident that your resolve to work towards enhancing the close ties of friendship and cooperation between our two countries will be strengthened even further in your new capacity. I look forward to working closely with Your Excellency in the years to come for the benefit of our two nations and the region. Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration. Mahinda Rajapaksa
