Eminent Sri Lankan Hindi scholar the late Prof. Indra Dassanayake was posthumously conferred the prestigious Padma Shri award by the President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind on 08 November 2021 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. Padma Shri is one of the highest civilian honours conferred by India. Ms. Wathsala Ishtaweera Dassanayake, the daughter of the late Prof. Dassanayake received the award from the President of India on behalf of her late mother. 

Subsequently, Ms. Dassanayake visited the High Commission of Sri Lanka in New Delhi with the award and called on Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to India Milinda Moragoda.

Apart from the late Prof. Indra Dassanayake, veteran Sri Lankan dancer Vajira Chitrasena was also nominated for the prestigious Padma Shri award for the year 2020. Previously, Sri Lankan music legend Pandit Amaradeva was conferred the Padma Shri award in 2002.
